PRESS RELEASE BY THE MINISTRY FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND TRADE PROMOTION: Statement on the status of Jerusalem

Reference Number: PR172834, Press Release Issue Date: Dec 07, 2017

Malta regrets and disagrees with the unilateral declaration made by the President of the United States on Jerusalem, and expresses its deep concern about possible repercussions while firmly reiterating its position that the future status of Jerusalem must be mutually agreed upon through meaningful peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.

Malta maintains, in the strongest of terms, its support for a solution based on two states, living side by side in peace, security, and mutual recognition, with Jerusalem as the capital of both states.

In this context, actions which undermine prospects for the two-state solution and exacerbate instability in the region must be avoided.
