The Central Public Library is the parent organisation of the Public Libraries System which is made up of seven Regional Libraries and thirty five Branch Libraries.
The Regional Libraries are located at in Birkirkara, Luqa, Mosta, Paola, Qormi, Rabat and Vittoriosa while the Branch Libraries are situated in Attard, Birzebbuga, Cospicua, Dingli, Fgura, Gharghur, Ghaxaq, Gudja, Gzira, Hamrun, Kalkara, Kirkop, Marsascala, Marsaxlokk, Mellieha, Mgarr, Mqabba, Msida, Naxxar, Pembroke, Qormi (St George), Qrendi, Safi, St Lucia, St Paul’s Bay, San Gwann, Senglea, Siggiewi, Sliema, Tarxien, Valletta, Zabbar, Zebbug, Zejtun and Zurrieq.
Public Libraries in Gozo consist of the Gozo Public Library and the Gozo Lending Library and another ten branch libraries namely Għajnsielem, Għarb, Għasri, Kercem, Nadur, Qala, San Lawrenz, Sannat, Xagħra, Xewkija and Zebbug.
The Central Public Library provides general public services at the Customer Care Unit, Adult and Junior lending libraries, the Reference and the Melitensia libraries, the Audio visual library and the People with Special Needs.
The Customer Care Unit besides acting as information bureau, it is responsible to keep a log of any complaints and inquiries made by customers. Furthermore, it issues new membership cards which are now handed out to the new clients in a few minutes.
The Adult and Junior lending libraries house a great number of fiction and non-fiction books both from Maltese and foreign authors. The collection is constantly evaluated and embedded with new titles to meet with our growing clientele and their changing needs.
The Reference and the Melitensia libraries offer a closed access service where clients can utilise the collection in-house. While the Reference library houses non-fiction reference material by foreign authors the Melitensia collection is made up of material which are related to Malta that is either written by Maltese authors or about Malta itself.
The Audiovisual library is presently offering circulation of talking books, DVDs and CDs. This service was introduced quite recently and the collection is frequently being updated to provide customers with different media both for educational and recreational purposes. Additionally, the library coordinates a WiFi area with a number computer stations.
The People with Special Needs section offers home delivery services to house-bound clients as well as services for the blind. The section also includes a multimedia section with several computer points which can be utilised by persons with learning difficulties.
During the year the Central Public library host Storytelling and Young Talent sessions every Friday at 4pm till 5pm. These sessions are open for children from 4 to 7 years old.
Several children activities are also being organised in a number of Regional and Branch libraries around Malta.
