The Department of Information is marking the 50th year of operations and services to the maltese population. The department is an indispensable link between the Government of Malta and the general public.

Throughout these years, the Department of Information recognized the importance of the conservation of all documents, filmography and photographs and today, the department boasts of an immense archive which marked a very important part in the history of our islands.

A commemorative publication was issued for this occasion and other various activities were organized to mark this event. These events included blood donation by the Department of Information employees and voluntary work at Dar tal-Providenza in Siggiewi.

A project was launched to digitise historic footage archived at the Department of Information in collaboration with the National Archives.

The series of events came to a close with the official inauguration of the exhibition 'Ritratti u Rikordji' (Flashbacks from the Past) where historic photos, archived footage, vintage photographic cameras and printing equipment, were displayed to the general public at St. James Cavalier, in Valletta. The inauguration was presided by the Prime Minister the Hon Lawrence Gonzi. During the same function, the Prime Minister presented mementos to former Directors of Information and long serving DOI staff. The exhibition was also visited by the President of Malta HE Dr Eddie Fenech Adami and Presidents Emeriti Dr Censu Tabone and Dr Ugo Mifsud Bonnici.
