Notice to Mariners No. 11 of 2024 

Live firing practice exercise at sea – Gunex 01/2024 

The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta notifies that the Armed Forces of Malta shall conduct a live firing practice exercise at sea from either Pembroke Ranges (LM-D01) or south of Malta (LM-D05) between Monday, 22nd April, 2024 and Friday, 26th April, 2024. 

The area to be used on the day, will be determined by the prevalent weather conditions. 

The exercise will take place within either of the areas as mentioned below, from 8.00 a.m. till 6.00 p.m. local time (from 6.00 a.m. till 4.00 p.m. UTC). 

At Pembroke ranges   LM-D01 (PEMBROKE HIGH)

All vessels in the vicinity must proceed with caution and keep at least eight and a half nautical miles (8.5NM) off the Pembroke coast, on the dates and times indicated.  

Mariners are also informed that a corridor of four nautical miles (4NM) between the coast and the line M to N (as shown on the chart A found on Transport Malta website (www.transport.gov.mt)) has been established for the passage of all vessels on the above-mentioned dates and times. Any vessel intending to transit through this corridor within these times is to communicate on VHF Channel 69 Malta VTS, for final approval prior to entering the area.

In view of the above all vessels in the vicinity must proceed with caution, they are advised to give the exercise areas a wide berth and comply at all times with any instructions given by AFM craft patrolling the area and by Valletta VTS on VHF Channel 12.

TRANSPORT MALTA 

Local Notice to Mariners No. 27 of 2024 

Replacement of two outer sections of pontoon O in Id-Daħla tal-Imsida 

The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta, notifies mariners and the general public that the two outer sections of pontoon O in Id-Daħla tal-Imsida will be replaced. 

The replacement of the two sections will be carried out on any days between Tuesday, 16th April, 2024 and Friday, 26th April, 2024. 

The work consists of removing the two outer sections of the pontoon, which will then be towed away to a shipyard. Two new replacement pontoon sections will then be lowered into the sea from a nearby quay and secured accordingly. 

The work will be carried out from a barge and will be assisted by divers. The barge will be moored within the area A, B, C and D, as shown on the chart found on Transport Malta website (www.transport.gov.mt​).

The barge will be displaying the international code of Signals Flag 'A' whilst diving operations are being carried out. 

Masters and operators of vessels are advised to keep a sharp lookout, navigate with caution and at slow speed (no wake) when navigating close to the indicated area. They are to keep a safety distance from the abovementioned area. 

They are to comply with any instructions given on VHF Channel 12 and/or 16, by Valletta VTS and co-operate with the contractor on site.

TRANSPORT MALTA 

Local Notice to Mariners No. 28 of 2024 

Hydrographic (multi-beam) surveys in St Paul's Bay and Mellieħa Bay BathMalta2 

The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta, notifies mariners that a Hydrographic (multi-beam) survey will be carried out in St Paul' Bay and Mellieħa Bay. 

The Hydrographic (multi-beam) survey will be carried out between Monday, 22nd April, 2024 and Wednesday, 24th April, 2024 and will be held within the area A, B, C, D, E, F, and the intermediate coastline, as shown on the chart found on Transport Malta website (www.transport.gov.mt). 

The survey will be carried out in all areas of St Paul's Bay, Mellieħa Bay and Salina Bay that are accessible and safe for the survey vessel to manoeuvre. 

A survey-support vessel will be used during the survey, therefore a wide berth of 25m is requested. The support vessel will be moving slowly and will display the International Code of Signals Flag 'D' during the survey. 

Masters and operators of vessels are advised to keep a sharp lookout, navigate with caution and at slow speed.  All vessels shall give the above-mentioned survey-support vessel a wide berth and shall cooperate with the survey team. 

They are to comply with any instructions given on VHF Channel 12 and/or 16, by Valletta VTS and by any enforcement personnel on site.
