PRESS RELEASE BY THE MINISTRY FOR JUSTICE, CULTURE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT: Għaxaq Music Festival commemorates 20th anniversary with thrilling music experience

The Għaxaq Music Festival is now in its 20th edition and is ready to offer a two-day thrilling music experience, including the Smokie World Tour and Ultimate Coldplay.
Speaking at the launch, Minister for Justice, Culture and Local Government Owen Bonnici highlighted the importance to support and encourage local initiatives of this nature. “Thanks to these projects, we are bringing culture and music in the centre of our localities, and through our support, we are further strengthening our strategy to make culture accessible to all,” he continued. He concluded by saying that with such festivals we are also promoting local talent, by providing them with a platform to showcase their music and giving them an outlet to nurture their talent.
The Għaxaq Music Festival kick-starts on Tuesday, 6th August with Ultimate Coldplay, voted ‘UK #1 Tribute to Coldplay’ at the 2018 National Tribute Music Awards. The tribute band is currently recreating Coldplay’s ‘A Head Full of Dreams’ tour with authentic costumes, stage mannerisms, fireworks, visuals and of course that distinctive Coldplay sound.

This event opens the stage to contemporary Maltese talent with Mathew James & Band (with several guest artists). In the best of traditions, this night is also a fusion of the latest thrilling Maltese and foreign performers.

Wednesday, 7th August sees the Smokie’s world tour back in Malta, after what was a very busy 2018, with 20 percent more shows than in 2017. Visiting more than 20 countries in 3 different continents, this certainly is such an anxiously awaited return to our islands of this iconic band. Celebrating over forty years of recording and touring this band plans to play the tracks from the new EP live, giving Maltese concert goers the opportunity to hear their array of well-loved classics.

This event will be held at Għaxaq grounds and entrance is free of charge. For more information visit
