PRESS RELEASE BY THE MINISTRY FOR TOURISM AND CONSUMER PROTECTION AND THE MALTA HOTELS AND RESTAURANTS ASSOCIATION - Sustaining the tourism industry and the way forward

In view of the Coronavirus outbreak across the world, the Ministry for Tourism and Consumer Protection together with the Office of the Prime Minister and other Ministries continue to keep constant close discussions with the main stakeholders in the tourism industry. 

This morning, Tourism Minister Julia Farrugia Portelli led another meeting between the Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association, the Ministry for Tourism and the Malta Tourism Authority. The parties analysed the latest developments and discussed the short term and long term challenges. A number of possible measures will now be discussed within Government structures.

In a dynamic scenario, the Minister for Tourism Julia Farrugia Portelli recommended that it is paramount for the country to grasp the current challenges and positively turn them into new opportunities.

The Minister added that it is now the right time to invest in the industry human resources with more training to improve the service and tourism product that the Maltese Islands offer.

The tourism industry is a resilient industry and shall undoubtedly remain strong. The Maltese Islands must be ready with an even more competitive and attractive product to keep the edge on our competition.​
