PRESS RELEASE BY THE OFFICE OF THE SPEAKER: Speaker Farrugia receives British High Commissioner Gill on a farewell call

Speaker Anġlu Farrugia received a farewell visit from Stuart William Gill, the British High Commissioner, whose posting in Malta will soon come to an end.

Speaker Farrugia expressed his appreciation to High Commissioner Gill for his tireless efforts during his tenure of office in Malta, which efforts enhanced further the very cordial relations that exist between Malta and the United Kingdom. 

Speaker Farrugia recalled his Chairmanship of the Small Branches of the Commonwealth and said that this coming week the Maltese Parliament would be organising online the CPA BIMR Conference. He referred to the importance of enhancing bilateral relations with the UK Parliament and mentioned the Maltese diaspora living in the UK, amounting to around 70,000 persons. 

The two dignitaries discussed issues of mutual interest, particularly the need to continue to explore all possible options to strengthen business relations in view of Brexit. They referred to the current debate in the House of Commons regarding the Internal Market Bill. 

The issues, inter alia, of money laundering and Moneyval as well as the possibility of full-time MPs featured in the discussion.
