PRESS RELEASE BY THE PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARIAT FOR YOUTH, RESEARCH, AND INNOVATION Launch of the Community Development and Innovation Scheme 2025 to support NGOs and voluntary organisations in delivering innovative community projects

The Parliamentary Secretariat for Youth, Research, and Innovation has officially launched the 2025 edition of the Community Development and Innovation Scheme. This initiative is designed to foster innovation and development within towns and villages by financially supporting non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and registered voluntary organisations (VOs) in implementing creative and impactful projects for the benefit of their communities.

Parliamentary Secretary Keith Azzopardi Tanti described the scheme as a significant step in bringing research and innovation closer to local communities. “This initiative aims to highlight the importance of research and innovation not just on a national scale, but also at the grassroots level through NGOs and voluntary groups that play a vital role in strengthening our society. The government remains committed to promoting community-based research and innovation that delivers tangible improvements to people's everyday lives."

The Chairperson of the Community Development and Innovation Scheme Board, Andrew Mizzi, noted that to date, around 120 organisations have benefited from this scheme. He emphasised that the financial support offered through this initiative continues to empower NGOs and voluntary organisations to develop and invest in innovative solutions that enhance community wellbeing.

For this year's edition, a total of €300,000 in funding has been allocated—an increase of €150,000 from the scheme's initial launch in 2023. Administered by the Parliamentary Secretariat for Youth, Research, and Innovation, the scheme will fund up to 80% of the actual project cost, with a maximum grant of €8,000 per project. Organisations must submit proposals for innovative community-based projects, with preference given to those incorporating elements of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
