PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT: The High Commissioner of the Republic of Malawi to Malta presents his credentials to the President of Malta Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca

On the 22nd October 2015, Mr Kena Mphonda presented his credentials to the President of Malta Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca at San Anton Palace.
 
During the ceremony, the President of Malta and the High Commissioner discussed bilateral relations.
 
Kena Mphonda has been High Commissioner of the Republic of Malawi to the United Kingdom since 18th June, 2015. He is concurrently accredited to Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Malta, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden. He is a career diplomat and before assuming his post, he was Chief of Protocol of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2012 and was Director of Political Affairs from 2010 to 2012.
 
From 2006 to 2010 he served as Deputy Ambassador of Malawi to the United States, a Mission which was concurrently accredited to Canada and Mexico.
 
Between 1996 and 2010, Mr Mphonda served in a number of positions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Malawi in the Departments of International Cooperation, Political Affairs and Protocol. He also served in the Ministry of Finance and the Office of the President and Cabinet between 1990 and 1996.
 
He started his diplomatic career in 1985 in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and served as a Second Secretary for Economic and Political Affairs in Bonn, Germany, from 1985 to 1987.
 
He was briefly in 1997 attached to the Malawi Mission to the United Nations in New York as part of an International Relations Fellowship Programme.
 
Mr Mphonda holds a Bachelors Degree from the University of Malawi (1984). He received a Master of Arts Degree in International Affairs from Ohio University at Athens in USA and was Hubert Humphrey Fellow in International Relations at the American University in Washington DC, USA, in 1997/98.
 
He was born on 28th March, 1961 and is married to Mary Chokani, an instructional designer. He has an avid interest in sports especially golf, biking and squash. He is currently writing a book on Malawi’s foreign policy.
