PRESS RELEASE BY THE MINISTRY FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND TRADE PROMOTION: Minister Abela meets the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr. Nils Muižnieks

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion Carmelo Abela welcomed the Council of Europe (CoE) Commissioner for Human Rights Mr. Nils Muižnieks for a courtesy meeting. Mr. Muižnieks is in Malta to monitor the human rights protection standards as part of Malta’s obligation as a CoE Member State.


Minister Abela stressed that Malta highly values the CoE’s human rights principles, as underlined in the European Convention on Human Rights, and is fully committed to work closely with the CoE to ascertain that the Maltese Government continues to put human rights at top of the agenda. As a testament to Malta’s progress in the human rights field, the Minister made reference to the unprecedented progress Malta witnessed in the last five years in efforts to guarantee LGBTIQ rights.


Minister Abela also expressed Malta’s appreciation for the CoE’s focus on the topic of migration. The Minister noted that the Council’s approach regarding the issue of migration is commendable since it incorporates the need to ensure that, while tackling the migration crisis, attention is given so as to ensure that migrants’ human rights remain at the top of the agenda.


Minister Abela augured the Commissioner a fruitful exchange in his several meetings with Maltese authorities and entities working in the field of human rights. The Minister also assured the Commissioner that Malta remains open to constructive criticism in this field in an effort to implement and ensure full abidance by the Council of Europe Convention on Human Rights.​
