ANIMAL WELFARE ACT (CAP. 439) USE OF KAROZZINI REGULATIONS (S.L. 439.22)
Guidelines issued by the Director for Animal Welfare pursuant to Regulation 6 of the Use of Karozzini Regulations (S.L. 439.22)
In exercise of the powers conferred by Regulation 6 of the Use of Karozzini Regulations (S.L. 439.22), the Director for Animal Welfare hereby issues the following Guidelines:
1. Citation and Commencement
These Guidelines may be cited as the Karozzini (Red Alert – Extreme Heat) Guidelines 2026, and shall come into force on the date of their publication in the Government Gazette.
2. Suspension of Operations During Red Alert – Extreme Heat Warnings
Whenever the Malta Meteorological Office issues an Official Red Alert – Extreme Heat Warning applicable to the Maltese Islands, no karozzin shall operate, nor shall any horse be used for the operation of a karozzin, for the duration of that Official Red Alert Warning.
3. Resumption of Operations
Operations may resume immediately upon the withdrawal or expiry of the Official Red Alert Warning, provided that all other provisions of the Use of Karozzini Regulations (S.L. 439.22) continue to be observed.
4. Existing Obligations
These Guidelines shall be read together with the provisions of the Use of Karozzini Regulations (S.L. 439.22) and shall not derogate from any obligation imposed by those Regulations.
5. Enforcement
In accordance with Regulation 6(3) of the Use of Karozzini Regulations (S.L. 439.22), any person acting in contravention of these Guidelines shall be deemed to have contravened the said Regulations.
