PRESS RELEASE BY THE MINISTRY FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND TRADE PROMOTION Commemorating the end of the Cold War in Moscow

On the 12 of December 2019, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion Carmelo Abela delivered a statement during a roundtable held in Moscow at the Gorbachev Foundation. The statement, which was read by Pierre Clive Agius, Ambassador of Malta to the Russian Federation, was delivered in the presence of the eminent and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Michael Gorbachev, the former and last President of the Soviet Union.

In his message, Minister Abela recalled how the meeting in Malta in 1989 between the USA and the USSR culminated in the end of the Cold War which was symbolically buried in the tempestuous sea. The Minister paid tribute to the two, both USSR President Gorbachev and the late US President George Bush who he described as political giants of good will.

Minister Abela added that the international community currently faces important challenges ranging from populism to intolerance and from the eradication of poverty to climate change.

Minister Abela concluded his message by stating the responsibility of the current generation of politicians to ensure that the Cold War remains only relevant in history books.
