PRESS RELEASE BY THE MINISTRY FOR TRANSPORT, INFRASTRUCTURE AND CAPITAL PROJECTS AND THE PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARIAT FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND COMMUNITIES: Another 170 residential roads to be rebuilt with a total estimated value of around €70 million

Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg announced that another call for offers is being issued by Infrastructure Malta towards the rebuilding of another 170 residential roads in different localities. Also present for the activity was Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government and Communities Silvio Parnis.

A few weeks ago, the same Minister and Parliamentary Secretary met for the announcement of the commencement of works on the first 31 residential roads from the first lot of 120 after a similar call for offers had been issued last year, resulting in 5 different consortia of contractors who are currently carrying out works on 5 sets of residential roads around Malta. Today’s activity was in fact held on a site including two among the first 31 roads started less than a month ago, Triq in-Newl and Triq Ħadd in-Nies in Żabbar.

“We came to visit these roads less than a month since we began works, which did not only include a layer of asphalt but also the installation of services, the building of foundations and the building of pavements – aspects which are synonymous with the way our work towards the improvement of infrastructure is being done. I am satisfied that these same families will now live in a more appropriate environment as befits every family and resident of our country’s roads.” This was the beginning of Minister Borg’s speech, which he continued by saying that works are also nearing completion in Vjal Sir Temi Zammit in Ta’ Xbiex, Triq Wied Għomor in St Julian’s and also – in fact – the new road built in Triq l-Għarnuq in Fgura, all of which formed part of the first 31 residential roads being done.

Minister Borg explained that as a result of this new call for 170 residential roads divided into 6 sets, our country and the residents living in these roadswill be benefitting from a total of 52 kilometres of roads and 85 kilometres of pavements will be built. He said that this work will include investments in the replacement and extension of services where necessary, work on pavements and storm water systems, foundations, asphalt and even signage, safety systems and other facilities which are added after the road is complete. Minister Borg said that the total value of this investment is estimated to amount to around €70 million.

“Therefore, today we continue to witness the delivery of this government’s pledge – a pledge which will be financing €700 million for the roads which are used by residents every day. We started with 120 roads and we are continuing with another 170 roads. We will continue with this work at this pace and we are working so that everything can be done at the highest standards and quality,” said the Minister.

As was done with the first call for offers, Infrastructure Malta will once again bind all bidders to confirm their technical ability to finish work within the stipulated timeframes and at the set quality and safety standards. This is to ensure that works on residential roads are complete in the shortest possible time without compromising quality or safety. Contractors who are delaying without justification are being fined and works that do not meet the desired quality are being redone at the expense of the contractor.

Infrastructure Malta will continue its work in this sector, working hand in hand with Local Councils and other stakeholders while also considering the requests for assistance by several residents, while assessments on current conditions and other factors such as the road’s connection to other roads and other areas within the locality and frequency of use are carried out.

“Because this is our commitment – appropriate infrastructure on every level to bring the benefits of a strong country to residents, families and businesses. Let’s continue working to raise our country’s standard of living,” the Minister Borg concluded.

Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government and Communities Silvio Parnis said that by means of Infrastructure Malta week after week we are seeing the government’s implementation of infrastructural works which are bringing a much-needed change in our roads and local councils have a crucial role in this change. This is because local government is the bridge between the residents and the central government. Parliamentary Secretary Parnis stated that since the commencement of this infrastructural work the residents are already seeing a very effective change and their response is very positive indeed. Parnis concluded by stating that this ambitious work is a clear example that the present government is implementing what was promised.
