PRESS RELEASE BY THE OFFICE OF THE SPEAKER: Speaker Farrugia receives courtesy visit from the new Iranian ambassador

​Speaker Anġlu Farrugia received a courtesy visit from the new Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran Hamad Reza Bayat.


Speaker Farrugia referred to the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries which took place in May 1972. He noted that a Maltese priest served in the Apostolic Nunciature in Tehran for three years before leaving last June.

Speaker Farrugia and Ambassador Bayat discussed topics of mutual interest, including parliamentary cooperation, trade and economic relations, and cultural initiatives.

The relations between the EU and Iran also featured in the discussions between the two dignitaries.
Ambassador Bayat was accompanied by Alireza Ghanimatpour, Counsellor at the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, based in Rome.
