Following discussions with the Prime Minister, Keith Schembri has resigned from his position as Chief of Staff to ensure that the Government keeps moving forward. This was announced by the Prime Minister in comments to the media.
The Prime Minister thanked Keith Schembri for the work carried out in his role. Mr Mark Farrugia will now take over the position of Chief of Staff.
The Prime Minister said that he took note of how, yesterday, members of parliament within the Government’s Parliamentary Group voiced their opinions in a responsible manner, and that he had asked for a vote of confidence which was approved unanimously.
At this moment, the country needs stability, said the Prime Minister, and his mandate, together with the decisions being taken, would guarantee this stability.
Prime Minister Joseph Muscat stated that the decisions being taken would serve the national interest and ensure that institutions kept working in a serene manner.
Dr Muscat said that he took note of advice given to him by various people not to pronounce himself during active investigations.
In the upcoming hours and days, once the investigations are completed, the Prime Minister will deliver a full account of his decisions.
