PRESS RELEASE BY THE MINISTRY FOR HOME AFFAIRS, NATIONAL SECURITY AND LAW ENFORCEMENT

Minister for Home Affairs, National Security and Law Enforcement, Byron Camilleri, held discussions with the General Workers Union Armed Forces Committee, whereby he made a commitment that soldiers in the Armed Forces of Malta will be paid for the overtime they are working during the COVID-19 emergency.

The Armed Forces of Malta is the only disciplined force whose members are not paid overtime. This is in sharp contrast with workers in other disciplined forces. Under this agreement, soldiers will be given an allowance after working 47 hours.

Minister Byron Camilleri stated, "We are taking this step since soldiers are the only members of disciplinary forces who are not paid for the overtime they work. The Government is fully aware of the sacrifice soldiers are making during these circumstances. It is for this reason that we chose to make this decision.”
