Prisoners are helping to combat the outbreak of Covid-19 by producing masks
and other personal protective equipment, that is not only being used by
officers and residents of the Corradino Correctional Facility, but also by
other government entities. These efforts come at a crucial time when it has
become challenging to find enough protective equipment all around the
world.
This initiative was praised by the Minister for Home Affairs, National
Security and Law Enforcement Byron Camilleri. In his remarks, he stated that
residents of the Corradino Correctional Facility are demonstrating the
importance of showing unity as a country through these challenging times. The Minister
reiterated that these initiatives serve to show the purpose of the correctional
facility as a place where rehabilitation is promoted, instead of punishment.
“From the bottom of my heart and on behalf of all the Maltese and Gozitan
people, I would like to thank them for this noble gesture. Now, more than ever,
we need each other to overcome this challenge,” stated Minister Camilleri.
The administration of the Corradino Correctional Facility explained how
this decision is a clear example of restorative justice. Despite the fact that
prisoners have made mistakes in the past, today they are giving back to society
during a difficult moment for the country.
