Speaker of the House of Representatives Anġlu Farrugia has received a courtesy call by new Ambassador of the Republic of Tunisia to Malta Yassine El Oued.
Speaker Farrugia and Ambassador El Oued recalled the very cordial relations between the two countries, which have existed even before diplomatic relations were established on 21st December 1967, almost fifty-three years ago.
Speaker Farrugia referred to his various visits to Tunisia, particularly his participation in the ceremony held in Tunis in February 2014, when the new Tunisian Constitution was adopted. He noted that many Maltese lived in Tunisia in the past years and mentioned the French dignitaries who are of Maltese origin and who had emigrated to France during the Tunisian fight for Independence in the mid-fifties. He also referred to the Maltese investors in Tunisia.
Speaker Farrugia and Ambassador El Oued discussed issues of mutual interest, particularly the need of EU support to Tunisia to overcome the problems which Tunisia is facing as a small democracy.
COVID-19 also featured in the discussion, which, as of today, has resulted in 3,890 fatalities out of 111,361 cases in Tunisia.
Ambassador of the Republic of Tunisia to Malta Yassine El Oued was accompanied by Mohamed Wael Khammassi, First Secretary of the Embassy of Tunisia.
