Speaker Anġlu Farrugia received the new Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Malta Kwon Hee-Seog.
Speaker Farrugia noted that diplomatic relations between Malta and the Republic of Korea were established on 30 April 1965, almost 55 years ago. He mentioned that 9 Maltese citizens were residing in the Republic of Korea, while 17 Korean nationals were working in Malta.
Speaker Farrugia referred to the participation of former Parliamentary Secretary Silvio Schembri in the Blockchain Governance World Summit which was held in Seoul in January 2019 as well as to the visit by the said Parliamentary Secretary in April 2019 when he led a business mission to Seoul.
The two dignitaries discussed trade and economic relations between the two countries, with the Korean Ambassador identifying areas of cooperation. They also mentioned Parliamentary cooperation, with Speaker Farrugia noting that he could meet his Korean counterpart in the 5th World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments which will be held in Vienna this coming August.
The relations between the European Union and the Republic of Korea, as well as the ASEM, also featured in the discussion.
The Ambassador of the Republic of Korea was accompanied by Mr Choi Youngjoon, Political Counsellor, and Ms Hong Soyoun, First Secretary, Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Rome.
