Restoration and mainetnance works underway at the Inquisitor's Palace

The Minister for National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government José Herrera visited the Inquisitor's Palace in Vittoriosa, as restoration works are being carried out on site. Heritage Malta is taking advantage of the fact that the Palace is currently closed to the public.

Minister Herrera explained that presently various works are being carried out, including restoration works, in order for the Palace to be restored to further reflect the period it was built. He stated that this Palace is one of Malta's most important heritage assets and is one of the oldest inquisition palaces in Europe. This building possesses a large number of records of inquisition judgments and civil court judgments.

As part of this project, an archaeological survey is being carried out in various wells and any remains found in the wells are being studied. Maintenance work is also being carried out in the sacristy, on the windows overlooking the main staircase and metal railings. Furthermore, curatorial work is underway on the collection found within the Palace in order to maintain it in a good condition. Heritage Malta is also currently analysing historic paint layers along the Piano Nobile with the help of paintings conservators and diagnostic scientific laboratories.

Restoration work is also being carried out on the back façade of the Palace by the masonry employees of Heritage Malta. In this regard, Minister Herrera stated that he was pleased to see that the trade of masony is still being practiced and individuals are being trained as this trade was being lost over time. MCAST are delivering courses in this regard and apprenticeship programmes are being offered by Heritage Malta.
