​ PRESS RELEASE BY THE OFFICE OF THE SPEAKER: Mr Speaker receives Italian Ambassador’s farewell visit

​​Speaker Anġlu Farrugia received a farewell visit from Mario Sammartino, Ambassador of Italy, whose tenure of office in Malta is coming to an end.

Speaker Farrugia expressed his appreciation to Ambassador Sammartino for his sterling work whereby the very strong long-standing and historic bilateral relations that exist between the two neighbouring countries have been further enhanced. He highlighted the contribution of the ambassador especially during difficult moments between the two countries, with the ambassador saying that he noted improvement in bilateral relations.

Speaker Farrugia referred to the various Italian statesmen who visited Malta and to his participation in the parliamentary event held in Rome in March 2017 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Rome Treaty.

The two dignitaries referred to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has severely hit Italy, with both Speaker Farrugia and Ambassador Sammartino looking forward to the availability of the vaccine in the near future. They discussed issues of mutual interest, with particular reference to migration, as well as the thousands of Italians working in Malta.

Ambassador Sammartino was accompanied by Andrea Marino, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of the Italian Republic in Malta.​
