An investment of around €30,000, co-financed with European funds, for the restoration of St. Andrew's Chapel
This was announced by the Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi during a visit to the locality of Żurrieq, together with Ms Rita Grima the Mayor of the Local Council of Żurrieq as beneficiaries of this project, and Mr Terence Camilleri, the manager of the Gal Xlokk foundation which manages these funds.
Parliamentary Secretary Zrinzo Azzopardi said that “with this project we continue to preserve our historical landmarks to strengthen the cultural heritage of our localities for the benefit of the local community, as well as for all those who appreciate the heritage left by our forefathers."
This project envisages the restoration of this chapel, dating back to 1575. It is located on the periphery of the village of Żurrieq near the Xarolla Windmill which also has a rich historical and cultural heritage. These are classified as 'Grade 1 Scheduled Buildings' by the Planning Authority ensuring they are protected due to their cultural heritage. Hence, with European funds, we are preserving them and improving their condition.
Parliamentary Secretary Zrinzo Azzopardi stated that this restoration work will continue to enhance the locality of Żurrieq while strengthening the Maltese tourism sector.
The ongoing works include the restoration of the external walls and the walls of the Chapel's courtyard perimeter. With this investment, the facade of this chapel is being cleaned, any plaster, renders and metal inserts will be removed, as well as structural interventions and consolidations.
Mayor of Żurrieq, Rita Grima said that “with the restoration of the Chapel of St. Andrew, the community in Zurrieq will benefit from the embellishment of the locality's historical heritage. St. Andrew's Chapel is one of the most visited chapels as it is located in a touristic place next to the Xarolla Windmill."
This project is one of the 21 restoration projects, which are being implemented by the LEADER programme administered by the GAL XLOKK Foundation.
