Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Claudette Buttigieg received a courtesy visit by Mr Milton Iniss, High Commissioner of Barbados, who is based in London.
Deputy Speaker Buttigieg welcomed the new high commissioner and said that, despite the geographical distance, there is ample scope for the strengthening of bilateral relations, given that Malta and Barbados are two small island states and members of the Commonwealth.
The deputy speaker also noted the latest political developments in Barbados and expressed her congratulations on Barbados' decision to become a republic and appoint its Governor-General Dame Sandra Mason as the first President of Barbados.
Mr Milton Iniss thanked the deputy speaker for her congratulatory remarks and elaborated on the political process which led Barbados to declare itself as a republic.
The two dignitaries discussed issues of mutual interest including the COVID-19 situation, the Commonwealth, as well as climate change.
