In accordance with the Food Safety Act and Regulation (EC) No. 178 of 2002 of the European Parliament and of the Council, the Environmental Health Directorate within the Superintendence of Public Health wishes to inform the public that following information received through the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed, the following product must not be consumed in view that it contains elevated levels of prohibited substance Leucomalachite green.
Malachite green is a fungicidal substance used globally in aquaculture but cannot be used in the EU for food-producing animals. Leucomalachite green is a metabolite of this substance, which is absorbed by the fish and is stored in its fatty tissues and can be stored for a long time. This substance can have carcinogenic effects.
