PRESS RELEASE BY THE MINISTRY FOR THE ENVIRONMENT, ENERGY AND PUBLIC CLEANLINESS Energy Ministry launches schemes to support renewable energy projects by households

A €10 million investment to shift to renewable energy; additional benefit for Gozo households

Over €10 million investment in renewable energy grants will support households in their shift to sustainable energy. This was announced by the Minister for Energy Miriam Dalli, who explained that this investment reflects Government's commitment to protect the environment and strengthen our communities.

“We will continue to support households to access renewable energy, through incentives that can help families be part of Malta's clean energy transition," stated Minister Dalli.

It was further explained that the 2025 Renewable Energy Systems Household Grants Scheme, administered by the Regulator for Energy and Water Services (REWS), is designed to help homeowners install photovoltaic systems and battery storage solutions.

Key features include a 10.5c feed-in tariff per unit for 20 years and a streamlined application process with instant approval for Part A applications.

The scheme offers various grant categories based on the type of renewable energy system installed:

OptionSystem TypeGrant Coverage
APV system with standard inverter50% of eligible costs, up to €2,500 per system (€625/kWp)
BPV system with hybrid inverter50% of eligible costs, up to €3,000 per system (€750/kWp)
CHybrid inverter + battery storage80% of battery costs, up to €7,200 (€720/kWh) + 80% of hybrid inverter costs, up to €1,800 (€450/kWp)
DBattery storage only80% of battery costs, up to €7,200 (€720/kWh)

An additional benefit for Gozo households includes increased grant coverage of 95% up to a maximum of €8,550 for battery storage installations.

"Gozo has a substantial number of solar panels, making it increasingly reliant on clean energy. At times, parts of Gozo operate entirely on clean energy, and we aim to further strengthen this by installing more battery storage in homes," said Minister Dalli.

From his end REWS CEO, Ing. Marjohn Abela stated that the 2024 RES Scheme was key in advancing renewable energy in Malta. With over 2,500 applications, it helped install photovoltaic (PV) systems and battery storage solutions in various sectors. “The 2025 Renewable Energy Grants confirm our commitment to supporting homeowners in switching to cleaner energy. With €10.3 million in funding, more people can benefit from PV systems and battery storage, enhancing energy efficiency and sustainability. The strong public interest in last year's scheme, along with our improved application process and incentives, will continue to drive Malta's renewable energy transition."

A second scheme is also being re-issued, offering a beneficial feed-in tariff for photovoltaic systems under 40kWp. The feed-in tariff is set at €0.15 per kWh for 20 years and does not include a grant. The application process is now simpler due to automatic approval of the first part of the application process. The feed-in tariff scheme is open to households, community organisations, and businesses.
