During the Public Service Expo 2025, Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Animal Rights Alicia Bugeja Said officially launched a national youth volunteering initiative aimed at promoting animal welfare.
The initiative, titled YVA – Youth Volunteering for Animals, seeks to provide young people with the opportunity to take an active role in supporting animal rights and welfare in Malta.
Parliamentary Secretary Alicia Bugeja Said encouraged youths to take part in this initiative, emphasising their potential to make a positive impact on society. “Young people are the future of our country. Today, we are clearly showing that we believe in them, and we want to see them at the forefront, even in the field of animal welfare,” said the parliamentary secretary.
The YVA initiative will offer structured training and hands-on experiences with animals housed in shelters and animal centres across Malta. Through this programme, youths will be given a real opportunity to contribute alongside voluntary organisations already carrying out essential daily work in the sector.
“Every time I visit these shelters, I witness firsthand just how important volunteering is for these animals. The presence of young people with new energy and fresh ideas can bring about a real and beautiful change, while continuing to strengthen the great work already being done,” the parliamentary secretary added.
She also urged all those who want to make a difference to apply and join this meaningful initiative. She concluded by thanking the Director of Animal Welfare, the Commissioner for Animal Welfare, and the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary for their collaboration and support in this initiative.
