PRESS RELEASE BY THE PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARIAT FOR PUBLIC WORKS: Regeneration of Mtarfa Square enters its final phase

Mtarfa Square will double in size, with 275 oak trees, shrubs, and seasonal flowers to be planted

The Mtarfa Square project, led by the Public Works Department and aimed at transforming the area into a larger and more attractive open space, has now entered its final phase, with 85% of the work completed. This was announced by Parliamentary Secretary for Public Works Omar Farrugia during a site visit accompanied by Mayor Dale Hayman.

The parliamentary secretary stated that this €1.8 million investment will see the square double in size, with 275 oak trees, shrubs, and newly planted seasonal flowers. “The Mtarfa Square project is a reflection of what we want to see in the heart of our localities - vibrant open spaces made by the people, for the people," he said.

Omar Farrugia also noted that the open space, covering approximately 3,100 square metres, will serve as a community area where families can spend quality time together, children can play, and youths can socialise. “This is the vision of a government that places the quality of life of the Maltese and Gozitan people at the forefront of its policies," he added.

Mtarfa mayor Dale Hayman explained that through this project, the Mtarfa community will benefit from a larger, more appealing, and greener square. “This project will mean more cultural and social activities for the families residing in Imtarfa, while our locality will have an open space where these families can spend quality time together."

In recent months, the main and secondary squares were merged into one large open space by removing the arches that previously separated the two areas. The project includes several environmental and sustainability goals. Works have involved the installation of new water infrastructure, including the restoration of an existing reservoir with a 340 cubic metre rainwater capacity, and the construction of a new reservoir with a capacity of 100 cubic metres to be used for irrigating the newly planted trees and plants. A new energy efficient smart lighting system has also been installed.

In recent weeks, paving works were completed, and pedestrian pathways were finalised using porphyry and lava stone tiles.

The final phase of the project will include the installation of new street furniture to enhance the space and improve accessibility, as well as the restructuring of the parking area along Triq ir-Reġimenti Maltin, which will include designated parking facilities for persons with disabilities.
