In accordance with Chapter 649 of the Food Safety and Security Act, and in line with the Authority's role to ensure transparency and public awareness on matters relating to food safety and security, the Authority hereby informs the public of the following information received through the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF). The alert states that the following food contact material is made of rPET plastic material and should not be used in a microwave.

Food contact materials intended for use in microwave must comply with the requirements set out in Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 on plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food, which require that such materials be suitable for their intended conditions of use, including exposure to heat.

Recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) is not authorised for use in tableware intended for microwave, as exposure to microwave heating may result in material degradation and the potential migration of substances into food, which may pose a risk to food safety.
