In accordance with Chapter 649 of the Food Safety and Security Act, and in line with the Authority's role to ensure transparency and public awareness on matters relating to food safety and security, the Authority hereby informs the public of the following information received through the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF), the following product must not be consumed due to elevated levels of pyrrolizidine alkaloids.
Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) are a large group of natural toxins synthesised as secondary metabolites by different plant species as a natural defence against insects and herbivores. Several PAs are known to be highly toxic to humans and animals. (Source: EFSA Journal Vol 15, Issue 7 – Jul 2017)
