PRESS RELEASE BY THE MINISTRY FOR THE ECONOMY, ENTERPRISE AND STRATEGIC PROJECTS: Malta joins the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI)

inister for the Economy, Enterprise, and Strategic Projects Silvio Schembri announces that Malta's application to join the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI), has formally been accepted. 

 

GPAI is an international initiative bringing together 44 member countries dedicated to the responsible, safe, secure and human‑centric development of Artificial Intelligence.

 

GPAI, supported by the OECD Secretariat in Paris, operates as a unique multi‑stakeholder platform that brings together governments, academia, civil society and industry to bridge the gap between AI theory and real‑world implementation. It promotes the practical application of AI Principles, ensuring that innovation is aligned with human rights, democratic values, and global standards of trustworthy AI governance.

 

Malta's accession reflects the country's ongoing commitment to advancing a digital ecosystem built on accountability, security, ethics and public trust. It also acknowledges the foundational work undertaken by the Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA) in establishing robust governance mechanisms for emerging technologies.

 

Minister Schembri remarked that “Malta's membership in GPAI is an important step in our national digital strategy and a clear demonstration of our commitment to responsible and forward‑looking AI governance. Joining this global partnership allows Malta to contribute to shaping the future of AI while ensuring access to global expertise. This milestone strengthens Malta's position as a proactive and trusted participant in international digital policy, leading to strengthened ecosystem for business and start-ups in AI and tangible benefits for citizens".

 

Kenneth Brincat, Chief Executive Officer, Malta Digital Innovation Authority stated that “Malta's accession to GPAI recognises the strong foundation we have built in digital regulation, innovation and literacy. We look forward to contributing Maltese expertise to GPAI's work while leveraging international insights to further strengthen our national framework for trustworthy AI."
