New Architectural Lighting for St Catherine's Chapel in Mqabba
An agreement was signed between the Public Works Department and the Mqabba Local Council, following the successful completion of restoration works in Mqabba's main square. This agreement means that the Public Works Department will be responsible for the ongoing maintenance of the square for the next ten years, ensuring that the investment is preserved in good condition and continues to serve the community effectively.
Additionally, a separate agreement was signed between the Public Works Department and the Mqabba Parish regarding the implementation of a new architectural lighting system for St Catherine's Chapel, a site of significant historical and cultural value. The aim is to enhance the chapel's visual presence through carefully designed external lighting that highlights its architectural features.
The renovation project of Mqabba Square focused on strengthening and improving the existing lava paving, which was cleaned and re-laid more securely, while the underlying structure and joints were upgraded. The works were carried out in phases to minimise inconvenience, resulting in a safer and more resilient public space.
Works on St Catherine's Chapel will include the installation of a modern, energy-efficient lighting system designed to respect the building's heritage while enhancing its overall appearance. The system will allow individual control of each lighting fixture, including dimming and the creation of different lighting scenes via a tablet interface. Special attention will be given to ensuring the installation is discreet and does not damage the structure, while also enabling various visual effects so the chapel can be illuminated appropriately for different occasions.
Parliamentary Secretary for Public Works Omar Farrugia stated that a commitment had been made to complete the works in Mqabba Square by the end of April, and that commitment was honoured. “Plans are now in place for the next ten years through the agreement with the Local Council to ensure regular maintenance so the square can continue to be enjoyed to the fullest. Another agreement had been signed for the architectural lighting of St Catherine's Chapel, for which the tender has already been issued. These two projects will further enhance this beautiful gem for the people of Mqabba."
Mqabba Mayor Grace Marie Zerafa stated that following the completion of works in the square, an agreement has now been signed between the Local Council and the Public Works Department for the next ten years. The maintenance agreement will support the Local Council in ensuring that the square remains in the best possible condition for residents and visitors alike.
Mqabba Parish Priest Fr Blake Camilleri thanked the Public Works Department for the work which will soon begin on the external lighting of St Catherine's Chapel, noting that it will allow the chapel's architectural style to be better appreciated, and it will strengthen the chapel as a cultural heritage asset.
