The Minister for European Funds, Social Dialogue and Consumer Protection, Keith Azzopardi Tanti, addressed the Business Breakfast organized by Mamo TCV Advocates on the new Equal Pay (Transparency and Reporting) Regulations. The Business Breakfast brought together legal practitioners, employers, policymakers, and other stakeholders to discuss the practical implementation of these new regulations in Malta.
The new regulations came into force in June through a Legal Notice, and thus Malta formally adopted the EU Pay Transparency Directive. These regulations introduce clearer rights and greater transparency that apply equally to both the public and private sectors. Among the most significant changes, job applicants now have the right to receive information regarding the initial pay level or range, while employers may no longer request information about an applicant's previous salary.
In his address, Minister Keith Azzopardi Tanti emphasized the importance of these regulations for equality and social justice. “The new regulations strengthen the principle that women and men should receive equal pay for equal work, or for work of equal value. The right to equal pay and the core transparency provisions are not limited to one specific sector but apply equally to both public and private sector employers, reflecting our belief that fairness in remuneration is a universal workplace principle."
Minister Azzopardi Tanti further explained that the Department for Industrial and Employment Relations (DIER) is supporting this process through information sessions and seminars with all stakeholders. He concluded that the Government is committed to ensuring that the implementation of these regulations is effective and will lead to meaningful change in our workplaces.
