For the first time, the community of Msida is enjoying a new public square and regenerated public spaces at the heart of the locality, as this important part of the Msida Creek Project has been opened to the public as promised ahead of the parish feast celebrations.
The celebrations began last weekend with activities for children and families, as well as the preparations for the traditional Ġostra, a much-loved attraction among the residents of Msida, and will continue according to the planned programme, which includes the highly anticipated final of the Ġostra.
The new square, together with sections of the waterfront promenade, is providing a more modern, safe and accessible environment for residents and visitors, while giving a new identity to one of the most central spaces within the locality.
The Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Employment, Jonathan Attard, accompanied by Infrastructure Malta Chief Executive Officer Steve Ellul and representatives of the Local Council, visited the site where they observed first-hand how these new spaces have already begun to be utilised by the community, as promised in recent weeks.
“It is with satisfaction that I note that the deadlines related to the completion of the square as part of this project here in Msida have been respected, so that the Msida community can now celebrate the feast better than before because they now have a new square which can be used not only for feast-related activities but also for their social and community purposes,” said Minister Attard.
While these areas are now open to the public, works on other parts of the project are continuing, including final works on the rear end of the square to ensure that the traditional feast procession can take place.
Minister Attard concluded by stating that this is an important milestone in a project that will continue to transform this area and progress for present and future generations.
Infrastructure Malta Chief Executive Officer Steve Ellul said that the opening of the square to the public represents another important step towards the completion of the broader vision for Msida Creek. “This is another significant achievement within the Msida project because we are now delivering new open spaces that Msida has never had before. Right here we have a square of almost 2,200 square metres, a square that is roughly the same size as St George’s Square Valletta, replacing what were previously four traffic lanes,” said Mr Ellul.
The Government and Infrastructure Malta remain committed to deliver the completion of the project responsibly and efficiently, so that the Msida community and the general public can continue to benefit from a modern, accessible and sustainable environment.
