PRESS RELEASE BY THE SUPERINTENDENCE OF PUBLIC HEALTH Health Authorities urge public to take precautions amid elevated temperatures

The Health Authorities are urging the public to take the necessary precautions as elevated temperatures continue to affect the Maltese Islands. Prolonged exposure to heat can lead to serious health effects, particularly among older persons, infants and young children, pregnant women, persons with chronic medical conditions, and those working or exercising outdoors. The health impacts of extreme heat are well recognised and largely preventable.

Members of the public are advised to:
Drink water regularly throughout the day, even if they do not feel thirsty.
Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day, typically between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
Stay in cool, shaded, or air-conditioned environments whenever possible.
Wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing and use sunscreen when outdoors.
Keep homes well-ventilated and use cooling devices where available.
Never leave children, older adults, or pets unattended in vehicles.
Check regularly on elderly relatives, neighbours, and vulnerable persons who may need assistance.

The public should be alert for signs of heat-related illness, including dizziness, excessive sweating, headache, nausea, weakness, confusion, or fainting. If a person develops symptoms suggestive of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, immediate medical assistance should be sought. Heat stroke is a medical emergency.

The Health Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and, in line with Malta's Heat Health Action Plan, remain prepared to implement the necessary measures to protect public health during periods of excessive heat.

The public is encouraged to follow official updates and heed any advisories issued by the competent authorities.
