Prime Minister Robert Abela reiterated Malta’s support for the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine while participating in the Sixth Summit of the International Crimea Platform in New York.
In his intervention, Dr Abela stated that Malta continues to condemn Russia’s occupation of Crimea and reiterated the position that actions which undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of States, violate the fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter.
The Prime Minister also spoke about the situation of people living in occupied territories and about the illegal transfer and deportation of Ukrainian children. He stressed that every child who has been unlawfully taken must be returned, while reiterating the importance of accountability for violations of international law.
“Justice for victims and accountability for those who violate international law are essential to building lasting peace,” Dr Abela said.
He reiterated that Malta will continue to support the work of international courts, tribunals and accountability mechanisms, while stressing that lasting peace must be founded on the United Nations Charter and respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of States.
The Prime Minister stressed that, at a time of international tensions and conflicts, the international community must remain steadfast in defending the principles of international law and the United Nations Charter.
Dr Abela concluded by reiterating Malta’s commitment to continue working with its international partners towards a just and lasting peace, based on respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity and international law.
