Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Employment Jonathan Attard, together with the Chief Executive Officer of Infrastructure Malta Steve Ellul, visited the works being carried out on Triq il-Marfa in Mellieħa, following the collapse of a wall approximately three storeys high due to the bad weather, which consequently affected access along this important road, particularly for the Mellieħa community.
Minister Jonathan Attard said that Infrastructure Malta intervened after the wall created a public safety hazard, obstructed access and caused significant inconvenience along this road, which is an important route between Għadira and Mellieħa. “Infrastructure Malta stepped in to carry out the necessary works on the wall in the shortest possible time, with the aim of reopening the road to the general public safely,” Minister Attard said.
The works were carried out at an accelerated pace and through continuous work, including overnight operations, in order to reduce the period of inconvenience for the community. The works, which were originally expected to take around three weeks, were instead aimed at being completed within a few days, so that Triq il-Marfa could be reopened as quickly as possible.
The works included the necessary interventions on the section of road affected by the collapse of the wall, while the required measures were taken to ensure that, once the road is reopened, access will be safe for residents and all road users.
The Chief Executive Officer of Infrastructure Malta, Steve Ellul, explained that the work on site has now reached its final phase and that the road will be reopened to traffic in the coming hours. “The work carried out by Infrastructure Malta has now reached its final phase and the road will be reopened to traffic tonight, while taking into consideration not only the environmental aspect, but also the historical value of this wall,” Mr Ellul said.
This intervention reflects Infrastructure Malta’s ongoing work to address situations affecting accessibility and road safety and, in cases of emergencies or unforeseen circumstances, to take the necessary steps to minimise the impact on communities as much as possible.
The Local Council of the locality was also present during the visit.
