PRESS RELEASE BY THE MINISTRY FOR ENERGY, THE ENVIRONMENT AND THE REGENERATION OF THE GRAND HARBOUR AND BY THE MINISTRY FOR EUROPEAN FUNDS, SOCIAL DIALOGUE AND CONSUMER PROTECTION From quarry to Park tal-Mitħna, an open space for everyone

Park tal-Mitħna has breathed new life into an area that served as a quarry for many years and where approximately 20,000 cubic metres of construction waste had accumulated over time. The site has now been transformed into a 7,000-square-metre park for everyone to enjoy, complete with a dedicated dog park.

Located in Mqabba, on the border with Qrendi, the park was inaugurated by Minister Miriam Dalli and Minister Keith Azzopardi Tanti during an event attended by residents, local organisations and representatives of neighbouring Local Councils.

Park tal-Mitħna was designed to provide visitors, particularly children, with a safe environment that brings them closer to nature. The park features a bug and bee hotel, a table tennis area, natural play areas for children, cycling paths and sanitary facilities.

The dedicated dog park is divided into two separate areas for smaller and larger dogs, allowing them to run and play in a safe and suitable environment.

These facilities provide families with different opportunities to spend quality time together outdoors, whether through play, physical activity or relaxation.

Environmental improvements were central to the site's transformation. In place of the former construction waste, 300 trees and more than 3,200 shrubs have been planted. A reservoir has also been constructed to collect rainwater, which will be reused to irrigate the park.

“Park tal-Mitħna is another example of how we are delivering on our promise to create more open spaces for families, where children can play, young people can stay active, and residents can find somewhere to relax and enjoy their surroundings. This is the kind of investment we want to continue making to improve people's quality of life. As announced in Budget 2027, we are further strengthening our commitment to creating more open spaces. We will continue working to give people back more places where they can spend quality time with their families, close to where they live. For us, investing in the environment means investing directly in Maltese and Gozitan families, our communities, and the quality of life we want to secure for future generations,” said Minister Miriam Dalli.

Minister Keith Azzopardi Tanti emphasised that the transformation of a former quarry into Park tal-Mitħna demonstrates how European funds are being translated into tangible investments that improve families' lives. “Through an investment of more than €2 million, co-financed by European funds, we are giving this area in Mqabba a new lease of life and bringing nature closer to people. For us, progress is also measured by the opportunities families have to relax and spend quality time with their children. We will continue directing European funds towards projects that address the needs of our communities and leave a better environment for future generations,” said the Minister.

Project Green's Chief Operations Officer, Beverley Costa, highlighted how Park tal-Mitħna has been equipped to encourage physical activity and promote healthier lifestyles. “Park tal-Mitħna offers families a place to take a break from their daily routines, relax and spend time together, while children play in a safe and modern environment. Through this project, we have combined environmental protection with recreation to create a space that encourages people to spend more time outdoors and closer to nature,” said Beverley Costa.
