PRESS RELEASE BY THE MINISTRY FOR ENERGY, THE ENVIRONMENT AND THE REGENERATION OF THE GRAND HARBOUR €2.56 million solar farm project capable of generating enough electricity to meet the consumption of approximately 900 households

Minister for Energy and the Environment Miriam Dalli visited a solar farm developed by Melita with an investment of €2.56 million on a site that was previously used as a quarry. The project was fully financed through private investment and benefited from REWS's Invitation to Bid (ITB) scheme. This scheme enables renewable energy projects to benefit from a favourable rate for the electricity they export to the national grid.

The Minister was accompanied by Melita Chief Executive Officer Harald Roesch and Kevin Borg, Head of Customer Operations and AI Implementation.

The Imqabba solar farm complements two other smaller solar farms the company operates. This solar farm exports all the electricity it generates directly to the national grid.

Minister Miriam Dalli encouraged more companies to follow Melita's example and invest in similar projects, enabling Malta to further strengthen its renewable energy sector. “These are the types of projects that we encourage as a country. We want to continue encouraging companies like Melita to increase their use of clean energy sources. Projects such as this demonstrate how investment in clean energy can deliver tangible results. This is the way forward, and I encourage more companies to follow suit," Minister Dalli said.

Melita is currently generating renewable energy equivalent to more than 40% of the electricity it consumes annually. The company is also working on further projects, with the ultimate aim of generating enough renewable energy to cover 100% of its electricity consumption.
