Making Use of Public Transport

​​​​​​​​TRAVELLING AROUND MALTA AND GOZO BY BUS

With more than 400 buses, the Malta Public Transport fleet is one of Europe's youngest and most modern. All buses are fitted with Euro 5 or Euro 6 engines with the latest diesel emission technology.  Easily identified by their distinctive green and white colour, the buses are not only comfortable, and environmentally friendly, but also ensure passengers benefit from the highest levels of safety throughout their journey. All buses are low floor and easily accessible for persons with mobility and other impairments and include facilities for wheelchair users. Further information on accessibility can be found here.

With over two thousand (2,000) bus stops located all across Malta and Gozo, one can be sure to find a bus to and from almost anywhere making the bus service an easy and environmentally friendly travel option in Malta and Gozo, both to regular commuters or to anyone visiting the Maltese islands. 

The bus route network connects Malta's International Airport, and Cruise port to all major hubs, destinations and places of interest, and runs across both Malta and Gozo, providing visitors with an inexpensive and efficient way to make the most of all that the Maltese islands have to offer. For information on how to travel around Malta and Gozo using the Public Transport buses, one may download one of the maps here. These maps are also available from the Sales and Informa​​​tion Offices​ located in the Valletta Bus Terminal, at the Sliema Ferries, in the Arrivals Lounge at the Malta International Airport, in the Bugibba Bus Terminal and in the Victoria (Gozo) Bus Terminal. 


PLANNING A JOURNEY AND INFORMATION ON ROUTE MAPS

A Maltese National and also a foreigner visiting Malta and Gozo can use the Journey Planner or Google Maps to plan ones journey.  To see detailed route maps and timetables information to schedule a journey from one locality to another, click here. 

One can also download the tallinja app for real-time bus information (such as the closest nearby bus stop,  which bus routes serve the closest stop and the estimated time of arrival of buses arriving at the closest bus stop within the next thirty (30) minutes, amongst others)  Planning a journey by bus is also easier with the tallinja app.  All bus stops are identifiable on a map, and by clicking on any one of these bus stops, one can plan the journey with ease. 


BUYING CARDS AND TICKETS

While bus tickets can be purchased from drivers on all buses, these Cash Tickets are Single Journey tickets that can be used to get to any destination within two hours, including interchanging. You can also opt for the tallinja cards. There is a range of bus cards, offering added value and reduced fares to suit one's needs, depending on the traveling patterns. TALLINJA CARD

The tallinja card is a personalised transport card which can be used on the public transport network in Malta and Gozo. Whether the person using the card is a Maltese National or a foreigner, when using the tallinja card, one will benefit from cheaper fares than when paying on the bus. A fare for every journey will be deducted automatically from the available credit. 

Different personalised cards and fares are available for ChildrenStudentsAdultsKartanzjan HoldersHolders of EU Disability Card with “MT" mark or Special ID Card issued by the Commissions for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and Gozo Residents.  To register for the tallinja card online, click here.  The approximate time to fill in the online form should take five (5) minutes.  On submission, the user will receive a system generated acknowledgement email.  Upon completion of the vetting process, which usually takes approximately two (2) working days to complete, the user will be informed that that details have been registered in the system and that the card shall be sent by post on the address specified during the filling in of the form. Malta Public Transport has an internal benchmark of two (2) weeks between the date of receipt of the application and the date by when the tallinja card is posted to the intended recipient.

FERRY SERVICE

Valletta Ferry Services and Malta Public Transport launched a service whereby holders of a tallinja card can benefit from reduced rates when paying with their card for their journey on the Valletta ferries. These include faster boarding time, the convenience of not having to carry any loose change for tickets and, more importantly, cheaper rates. The ferry service is operating along the below-listed routes: 

  • Sliema – Valletta – Sliema
  • Cospicua – Valletta – Cospicua

TICKET OR CARD REFUNDS

Scheduled public transport (regular service) passengers pay for their faire onboard the bus either by using the travel card (more commonly known as the Tallinja Card) or through a cash ticket. Cash tickets can be purchased either through actual cash or else by means of contactless payments such as credit cards, smart phones and watches.  Therefore, payment is only effected once passenger has boarded the bus at the start of his/her journey. There is no pre purchase/ booking for the service.

Furthermore, the longest trip on the island is 37.179 kilometre (km) and thus, appealing and claiming a ticket or card refund, is outside the scope of Regulation 181/2011, where it refers to ticket refunds.
