Making Use of Public Transport

With more than 400 buses, the Malta Public Transport fleet is one of Europe's youngest and most modern. All buses are fitted with Euro 5 or Euro 6 engines with the latest diesel emission technology.  Easily identified by their distinctive green and white colour, the buses are not only comfortable, and environmentally friendly, but also ensure passengers benefit from the highest levels of safety throughout their journey. All buses are low floor and easily accessible for persons with mobility and other impairments and include facilities for wheelchair users. Further information on accessibility can be found here.

The bus route network connects Malta's International Airport, and Cruise port to all major hubs, destinations and places of interest, and runs across both Malta and Gozo, providing visitors with an inexpensive and efficient way to make the most of all that the Maltese islands have to offer. Valletta Ferry Services and Malta Public Transport launched a service whereby holders of a tallinja card can benefit from reduced rates when paying with their card for their journey on the Valletta ferries. These include faster boarding time, the convenience of not having to carry any loose change for tickets and, more importantly, cheaper rates. The ferry service is operating along the below-listed routes:

  • Sliema – Valletta – Sliema
  • Cospicua – Valletta – Cospicua

Click here for further details about the service including fare rates or click here to view the schedule of the ferry.

Scheduled public transport (regular service) passengers pay for their faire onboard the bus either by using the travel card (more commonly known as the Tallinja Card) or through a cash ticket. Cash tickets can be purchased either through actual cash or else by means of contactless payments such as credit cards, smart phones and watches.  Therefore, payment is only effected once passenger has boarded the bus at the start of his/her journey. There is no pre purchase/ booking for the service.

Furthermore, the longest trip on the island is 37.179 kilometre (km) and thus, appealing and claiming a ticket or card refund, is outside the scope of Regulation 181/2011, where it refers to ticket refunds.
