Social media platforms have changed the way we communicate with one another, obtain information, and even express ourselves to others and for others.

While there is no doubt that social media served as an important tool and brought about positive effects, there is growing evidence indication significant challenges that require attention.

There are particular groups in society who face specific vulnerabilities, among them children. Research refers to the excessive use of social media, with a widespread impact on mental health such as high levels of anxiety and depression, as well as isolation and antisocial behaviour.

The systems used by many of these platforms, such as algorithms, lead to infinite scrolling and long hours spent on these platforms.

Governments around the world are responding to these new realities through regulatory frameworks. Some have restricted the age of those who can assess these platforms, while others are still discussing the issue.

Regulating access to social media can help in the prevention of many forms of abuse, including sexual abuse of children.

The European Union is also giving importance to this subject. Therefore, it is important for Malta to follow these developments. The EU's Digital Services Act establishes new obligations intended to increase the accountability of platforms and the protection of those who use them. Under this Act, guidelines on the protection of minors were published. In addition, various other initiatives have been taken and are being explored at the European level, including the European Commission's Panel of Experts on Social Media.
