The National Fisheries Strategy for Malta 2026–2036 was developed over several years using an evidence-based methodology. This process included the analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data gathered through scientific practices, as well as an extensive consultation process comprising 37 meetings with fishers. This was followed by inter-ministerial consultations with authorities and entities connected to the fisheries sector.
The Strategy is guided by principles grounded in evidence and aligned with the European legal framework, socio-economic justice, the safeguarding of traditional practices, and the continuous involvement of stakeholders.
These principles establish four Strategic Pillars:
Sustainable fishing activities and practices
Generational renewal
Investment in fisheries infrastructure
Education and training
Under these four pillars, the Strategy identifies 20 Strategic Objectives, which propose 86 action measures to be implemented over a 10-year period. The aim of this Strategy is to establish a long-term plan to strengthen the sustainability, resilience, and viability of the fisheries sector in Malta.
