Wondering whether you’re pregnant? Just found out you’re expecting? This is what you need to know.
Am I Pregnant?
Some women know instantly that they’re pregnant, especially if their menstrual cycle is regular, while others won’t realise until a little later on. Either way, these are some of the symptoms to look out for:
Nausea and vomiting
Tiredness
Breast tenderness
The need to go to the toilet more often
Sensory sensitivity, such as a more heightened sense of taste or smell
If you have some or all of these symptoms, and there is a chance you could be pregnant, then it’s best to take a test. At-home tests can be bought over the counter from your pharmacy and are known to be over 99% accurate, or you could visit your GP or gynaecologist in Malta to be tested there.
Antenatal Care
Whether you’re trying to get pregnant or have just discovered that you’re expecting, you will need to support your body very well over the next few months. If you’re hoping to conceive, you can follow the helpful guide here to improve your chances. Meanwhile, if you have a little one on the way, you can look at ways of improving your lifestyle, eating more healthily and ensuring your body is in tip-top condition here.
During your pregnancy you may also wish to attend antenatal classes, to meet with other expectant mums and get some advice from professionals. There are various prenatal and antenatal classes in Malta, offering everything from Pilates and exercise sessions to breastfeeding and birth preparation seminars.
The Parentcraft Services Unit within Mater Dei Hospital offers courses to expectant clients/couples, but also to new parents. Further information on this unit can be found here.
Illness & Issues
Sadly not all pregnancies go to plan. From common issues such as morning sickness and chronic back pain, to miscarriage, ectopic pregnancies and the loss of a baby, it is best to be prepared. Speak to your GP or gynaecologist for advice and guidance on what you can do to ensure the best for you and your unborn baby.
